Background

This prestigious annual lecture is held in honour of the esteemed founder and first chairman of The Church of Pentecost (CoP), Pastor James McKeown, a beacon of the Pentecostal-Charismatic movement in Ghana. It serves as a platform for dialogue between academics and ecclesial practitioners, elevating the discourse around the Global Pentecostal-Charismatic movement. It is the academic and scholarly engine of the Possessing the Nations Agenda of the CoP and it seeks to provide an enrich perspective for a global audience. By critically examining, assessing, and reflecting on the praxis and theories of their faith, participants contribute to the global understanding and appreciation of the Pentecostal-Charismatic movement, a privilege that underscores the importance of this event.

A Few Words On The

Rationale for the 2024 theme

The urgency of the Parousia has been a seminal driving force behind the Pentecostal-Charismatic mission and its global evangelization effort. This sense of urgency in their mission praxis has contributed significantly to the phenomenal growth of the movement within the last century.
However, it has also created some blind spots in their approach to missions. Until recently, Pentecostals have proclaimed the Gospel of Christ without much focus on social transformation. Pentecostal denominations that were involved in social transformation activities like building of hospitals, schools, and the provision of portal water, have always used them as launchpads to preach the Good News but not as integral aspects of mission. However, the Possessing the Nations Agenda of the CoP enjoins the Christian body to be actively involved in the redemptive work of Christ through the transformation of the nations. Therefore, there is a growing recognition within the Pentecostal-Charismatic body that social transformation should be an integral part of their mainstream mission.

The 2024 JMML is under the theme, Deeply Rooted, Fully Transformed: A People of God Empowered to Transform their Spheres. This theme aims at stimulating research and dialogue among scholars and practitioners on the need to integrate social transformation into the mission of Pentecostal Charismatic churches. While efforts at social transformation are commendable, they are often not viewed as integral aspects of mission, as mentioned earlier. By embracing a more holistic approach to mission, the Pentecostal-Charismatic movement has the potential to transform not only
individuals but entire societies. Through the power of the Holy Spirit and the priesthood of all believers, the church can be a transformative force in addressing systemic issues, promoting justice, and demonstrating the compassion and love of Christ in tangible ways. This integration of social transformation into the mission agenda may, however, face challenges or resistance from some within the tradition who prioritize evangelism and spiritual renewal above other concerns.

It is, therefore, crucial to engage in a thoughtful dialogue and find ways to harmonize these aspects of
mission since they are interconnected and mutually reinforcing.
